Clearance (loading gauge)

The clearance envelope is the space around the track that must stay free for vehicles to pass — sideways (tunnel walls, signals, the neighbouring track in curves) and in height (bridges, catenary, passages between levels). If it is violated, trains scrape or jam. Especially critical: curves (long vehicles swing out) and helixes (headroom between the turns).
