Usable length

Usable length between fouling point and buffer stop

The usable length is the portion of a track actually available for trains — measured between the fouling points of the turnouts, or up to the buffer stop. It decides which train length fits a station or storage track. A classic planning mistake: station tracks whose usable length is shorter than the favourite train.
