Shunting (switching)

Shunting (US: switching) is moving individual vehicles and car groups outside normal train runs: spotting cars, making up trains, running locomotives round. Shunting turns a “watch it loop” layout into a layout with a job to do — it needs turnouts, a headshunt, industry spurs and uncouplers.
