Headshunt (shunting neck)

The headshunt is a stub track at the edge of a station or yard onto which the shunting locomotive draws groups of cars before pushing them back into other tracks. It enables shunting without blocking the main line. Its length determines how many cars can be moved in one go. (US: switching lead or drill track.)
