Know-how

The most common track plan mistakes — and how to avoid them

Almost every layout trips over the same traps — usually long before the first track is laid. Here are the most common mistakes and how to dodge them.

1. Radii too tight

A tight curve looks great on paper — until the long loco derails. Stick to your stock's minimum radius. Trackplanner warns you automatically when a curve gets too tight.

2. Forgetting reach

Can't reach the back corner anymore? Plan for reach depths of no more than 60–70 cm and add access hatches for large layouts.

3. Gradients too steep

Almost everyone wants two levels — but the gradient between them ruins more layouts than any other mistake. Rule of thumb: stay under 2%.

4. Buying before planning

Buying locos and track before the plan is set goes wrong 9 times out of 10. Plan for free first — then order exactly what you need.

5. No room to expand

Leave space for later. A layout almost always grows.

The good news: Trackplanner's live check flags many of these traps automatically, while you're still planning.
